Step 4 of my five-step coaching process involves recognizing progress against the baseline using chronological markers.

As with any discipline, it’s critical to measure progress. Metrics help inform our moment-to-moment decisions and stay inspired.

But too often, we fixate on lagging indicators (e.g., how profitable were we last quarter?) and ignore leading indicators (how many revenue-generating opportunities are in the pipeline?). To recognize progress and forecast success, it’s important to track both lagging and leading metrics.

Because you can’t change where you’ve been, but you can always change where you’re headed.
